#S85 Small and medium-sized ports collaboration for efficient supply chains (SMPorts)

Policy Area Transport – Improving internal and external transport links

The main project idea aims at improving conditions for small and medium sized ports (SMP) in the Baltic Sea region by focusing on three main issues; promotion, enhancing port related industries and services and developing planning tools for SMPs. The objective is to improve port – port and port – hinterland connections by developing tailor-made solutions for SMPs. SMPs are defined as ports handling less than 10 million tons of cargo. Adding all SMP cargo volume they are handling 1/3 of the total volume in the region. Therefore, the project plans to promote SMPs relevance within the EU transport system by emphasizing specialisation and cooperation possibilities between SMPs but also with large ports. In addition, the project plans to identify and remove obstacles for new or developing port related industries and services. The third big topic that will be addressed is developing strategic planning tools that will be adjusted to SMPs’ needs also taking into account new EU and national regulations concerning environmental and administrative demands.
