#S62 Evaluation and promotion of rural wastewater treatment for reduction of nutrient loads to the Baltic Sea (BaRuWa)

Priority Area Nutri - Reducing nutrient inputs to the sea to acceptable levels

Although most of the population in the Baltic Sea Region countries is connected to central sewer systems and urban wastewater treatment plants, a significant number of people (e.g. up to 5% in Germany but 36% in Poland) live in areas that are not served by such systems. Rural wastewater often contributes less than 10 % to the total catchment nutrient load, but it can significantly increase the in-stream nutrient concentrations, particularly during the most sensitive summer period. Thus, the overall objective of this project is to evaluate and promote technologies for small-scale wastewater treatment suitable for rural and peri-urban areas.
