Urbanisation in the Central Baltic Region causes regional development disparities, e.g. rural underdevelopment, which has a strong negative impact especially on the SME sector.Underdevelopment takes place when resources are not used to their full socio-economic potential. The SmartCommunity main project aims at contributing to rural development by facilitating regional branding and identity building.

The SmartCommunity project is based on smart specialisation of creative and community enterprises for designing and implementing strategies of building regional identity and for contributing to rural development in the Central Baltic Region. The main project targets community enterprises of all kind (especially tourism), as well as creative industries, including design, crafts, theatre, arts, music, innovative museums, events, festivals and other activities. The specific focus lies on rural areas that do not have strong image yet.
