#S32 Baltic Blue Growth - Initiation of large-scale feed-mussel farming in the Baltic sea (BBG)

PA Nutri – Reducing nutrient inputs to the sea to acceptable levels

Mussel farming produces high-value protein, and is one of the few known, available methods to counteract eutrophication from diffuse sources. However, to encourage new entrepreneurs and decision makers, there is a need to demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale mussel farming in the Baltic Sea Region. The main project will aim at this by putting a number of large-scale, ice-safe farms into practice, strengthening the link to the feed-industry and launching economic initiatives for mussel farming in the Baltic Sea. The main project has the initial target of producing two times 50 tons of Baltic blue mussels from a few different locations around the Baltic Sea during a four-year period. Harvest will be twice during the project period. Harvest, processing to mussel meal and sales will be coordinated within the project.
