#S23 Control of dioxin contamination in the Baltic Sea Region (CONDOR)

PA Hazards – Reducing the use and impact of hazardous substances

In spite of the emission reduction measures implemented so far, dioxins and furans continue to pose a problem in the Baltic Sea Region with risks related to fish contamination and consequent risks to human health. A mix of point and diffuse sources is potentially responsible for this situation.

The aim of the main project is to improve the control of the dioxin, furan and dioxin-like PCB emissions in the Baltic Sea Region from less controlled point sources and diffuse sources and to reduce their impact in the Region. The main project will also contribute to managing the environmental risk by improving the general understanding of the problem as well as by strengthening policy actions and instruments. A special focus will be put on small scale sources, and in particular small scale combustion sources. There is a strong need for better knowledge about the overall contribution from these sources and how to manage them from a policy perspective.
