#S18 Marine Nature Capital- marine protected areas as basis for sustainable development of the Baltic Sea region (MareCap)

PA Bio – Preserving natural zones and biodiversity, including fisheries

The overall objective of the main project being prepared is to contribute to the sustainable use of marine resources by improving the surveillance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and assessment of their role in maintaining the marine ecosystem by:

  • demonstrating the economic potential of implemented management plans;
  • assessing pressures and their management at local/regional level;
  • analysing barriers and potentials for acceptance of stakeholders; and
  • linking the MPA assessment to the new approach of Good Environmental Status according to the MSFD.

MareCap aims at being demonstration project bridging some of the gaps between the existing guidelines, operational management and control of MPAs and making substantial progress towards an improved management of the Baltic Sea biodiversity and natural capital.
